Smoking Ban Date Announced
The Smoking Ban will come into effect on Monday 26th January 2004 as the health minister
signed the 'paperwork' for the law to be ratified.

Publicans Vow to Fight Smoking Ban
Publicans in seven more counties have vowed to defy the governments smoking ban
even it means a jail sentence. Members of the VFI in Momaghan, Louth, Sligo, Leitrim,
Cavan, Mayo and Waterford are opposed to the ban with Waterford VFI representative saying
that the ban is "unenforceable, unworkable and unfair."
Black and White Pub Awards Announced
The Black and White Pub Awards have been announced and the overall winner for best pub
in Ireland was Barry's Pub in Douglas, Cork. The panel of judges included Dublin Football
Captain Ciaran Whelan and RTE star Kathryn Thomas. The Waterloo Pub (Pub Details) was voted Dublin Pub of the year, while The
Stillorgan Park Hotel won the best Dublin City and County Hotel Bar of the year. The
Penny Hill, Lucan (Pub Details) won as the best Dublin
City and County Superpub. The Leinster Pub of the Year was Edward J Valantine's in Longford.
Among the criteria the pubs were jugded under were staff efficiency and friendliness, atmosphere and hygiene.
The Pod to become Jazz Cafe
The Pod is set to finish it's longstanding format as one of Dublin's top dance clubs
and instead will be turned into a jazz cafe. Owner John Reynolds has wanted to do this
for a while and will now concentrate all dance events in the Red Box.
Opposition To Smoking Ban
Pubs in Kerry are not going to support the Smoking Ban when it's introduced. This
follows a meeting of the regions Vintners. Pat Spillane (former Kerry GAA star and
publican) has also voiced his displeasure with the smoking ban saying it's unworkable.
The new laws also came in for questioning with many in the countryside saying that
tourism will be hit as a result of visiting families unable to visit singing pubs if
with children after nine. The Mayo Vintners association will be meeting this week to
discuss the topic.
