Located in the very heart of Dublin City is Trader John's Pub on Moore Street, a real Dublin pub full of character and personality, at the centre of Dublin's most famous market street. Trader John's Pub is a real taste of Dublin, a haven of peace and gentle talk during the day and, at night, full of the 'craic' so well loved by Dubliners and visitors to the city. Outside the street is full of the colour and bustle of Dublin City's busiest fresh fruit and vegetable market, teeming with life throughout the day.
As soon as you enter Trader John's, you are immediately returned to olde worlde Dublin. From the double front doors that originally came from an old courthouse to the church pulpit encased in the stairway, the distinctive wooden interior reflects the bygone era often referred to as 'Dublin in the rare ould times'.
As one's eye travels over the interior of Trader John's and you soak up the unique atmosphere so typical of a real Dublin pub, you cannot help noticing the other unique features of the pub like the old wireless, still in working order, an old plough and the fine old iron bell that hangs behind the bar counter.
The pub's namesake, Trader John Clarke, was a famous Moore Street character from the late 1800s. Born off Pill Lane in nearby Oxmanstown, Trader John travelled around the city on a bicycle collecting old clothes and other second hand goods to sell at his pitch around Cole's Lane and Moore Street. At that time, Moore Street was more famed as a clothes bazaar than the fruit and vegetable market it is today. Trader John Clarke was always fascinated by travel and, having saved a sizeable amount of money from his buying and selling enterprise, he then set off to travel around Europe. Little is known about his foreign travels except that he married a German girl and finally settled in the United States of America.
