The Playwright is a "superpub" and has won "Best superpub in Ireland" award a rake of times. Of course, what isn't mentioned is that there are only a handful of these in total in Ireland. Whether it's deserving of an award is debatable, but it certainely deserves some praise.
The exterior boasts one of the largest thatch rooves in Eire and a very countryish stained outside with a beer garden for those lazy summer sundays. Inside keeps the country theme, although somehow reminds me of a lot of English bars, with a few different levels with balcony areas overlooking the main crowd - excellent for talent scouting.
There's usually a good crowd around from Thursday to Sunday. The average age is probably mid-thirties but there are a decent number of younger lads and lasses around, usually planning a trip up to club92 around 11pm. Sometimes there is a bit of a snobish, cliquey kind of atmosphere but usually the crowd is friendly enough to allow for mingling. Also, it seems that everytime I go there I meet long-lost friends from all walks of life - its uncanny and seems to happen to everyone. If you only go here once a year, make sure its over the Christmas holiday and preferably the 26th. This night, in this bar, is the stuff of legends.
