There are now more than 9,000 taxis on the road in Dublin so getting a taxi
home should not be too much of a problem....
Taxis can be identified by their Taxi Plate - a yellow box on top of the
car.
Unlike other cities e.g. Black Cabs in London, taxis in Ireland can be
any colour and be any type of car although generally they are all
spacious and have four doors.
The maximum number of passengers allowed in a taxi is four although some
can take 7 and are wheelchair accessible.
They charge on a meter basis which is usually located above the car radio.
Ensure this is switched on when you get in.
Each taxi should display their ID and their set charges, this can usually
be found on the dashboard in front of the drivers passenger seat.
Hackneys can generally only be got from their bases. There are quite a
few popping up around the city at presents although ranks still remain
a better option.
Hackneys can be phoned to pick you up at your house or hotel.
There are various taxi ranks around the city centre. On weekend nights,
there are always long queues and you may be waiting for over an hour.
The most central rank is located on Dame Street directly across from Bank of Ireland.
There is also another one situated at St.Stephens Green opposite the
Stephens Green Shopping Centre. Once again though expect long queues.
If you can't stand queues and are looking for a taxi, you could try walking
towards your home in the hope that an inward bound cab will stop and pick you
up. With this said, we do not recommend anybody to walk around the streets
of Dublin on their own.
